Custom hardwood deck in Adelaide

How Much Does a Deck Cost in Adelaide?

An honest 2026 guide to what drives the cost of a custom hardwood deck, and how to think about your budget.

The Short Answer

It comes down to four things

There's no single price for a deck, and anyone who gives you one over the phone is guessing. What a deck costs in Adelaide comes down mainly to four things: its size, how far it sits off the ground, the timber species, and how complex the site is.

A simple low-profile deck in a common hardwood is the most affordable build. Raised decks, pool surrounds, sloping blocks, tricky access and premium timbers each move the figure up. Two decks the same size can differ by thousands once those factors are in.

That's why we don't quote off plans we haven't seen. The only accurate number comes from someone standing on your block, looking at the access, the slope and the substructure. That visit is free, and it's the fastest way to a real figure.

Where The Money Goes

What makes one deck cost more than another

01

Size

The obvious one. More square metres means more timber, more substructure and more labour. Cost per square metre often eases a little as a deck gets bigger.

02

Height off the ground

A raised deck needs deeper footings, more framing and usually balustrade and stairs. A low-profile deck tucked near ground level is far simpler, and cheaper.

03

Timber species

Merbau, spotted gum, jarrah and other hardwoods each carry different prices. We choose for your site and how the deck will weather, not for the cheapest invoice.

04

Site and detailing

Sloping blocks, tight access, pool surrounds, built-in seating and feature work all add. So does removing an old deck before we start.

Materials

Hardwood, composite or treated pine?

Treated pine is the cheapest to install but ages hardest and needs the most upkeep. Composite sits high on price and skips the sanding and oiling, but it's a manufactured look. Hardwood costs more than pine and sits near composite, and for most clients it's the right long-term call: it handles South Australian heat, it ages with character, and detailed properly it lasts decades.

We build in hardwood because it's what we'd put on our own homes, and we pick the species once we've seen your site. The right timber depends on sun, exposure and how the deck will get used, which is another reason a real quote beats a phone-call guess.

Approvals

Do you need council approval?

It depends on the deck's height, its size and your council. Many low-profile decks under a set height don't need development approval. Raised decks and larger builds often do, and the rules vary between councils across Adelaide's south, the foothills and the Fleurieu.

We build to the rules and we'll tell you, at the quote visit, what your council requires before a sod is turned. No surprises later.

Common Questions

Deck costs, answered honestly

What determines the cost of a deck in Adelaide?

Mainly four things: size, how far the deck sits off the ground, the timber species, and how complex the site is. A simple low-profile deck in a common hardwood is the most affordable; raised decks, pool surrounds and premium timbers cost more. The accurate number comes from a free on-site quote.

Why can two decks of the same size cost different amounts?

Area is only part of it. A raised deck needs more substructure, footings, balustrade and stairs than a low-profile deck of the same size. Access, slope, timber choice, pool surrounds and feature detailing all shift the figure.

Is hardwood worth it over composite or treated pine?

Hardwood costs more than pine and sits near composite, but it handles SA conditions and ages well when detailed properly. For a deck you want to keep for decades, it's usually the better long-term value.

Do I need council approval for a deck in SA?

It depends on height, size and your council. Many low-profile decks don't need approval; raised and larger builds often do. We advise on your council's rules during the quote visit.

How long does it take to build a deck?

Most builds take two to six weeks on site once work starts, plus design and scheduling lead time. We run only two to three projects at a time, so you get a realistic start date.
